Description: | Aims: To enable students to apply theoretical knowledge and understanding of basic Sport and Exercise Sciences to multidisciplinary Public Health challenges related to sedentary lifestyles and chronic disease. Learning Outcomes: Demonstrate an ability to synthesise current evidence from a range of disciplines and apply them to the multi-disciplinary Public Health challenge of sedentary lifestyles. Demonstrate an ability to formulate multi-disciplinary, evidence-based strategies to improve sedentary lifestyles within a range of population groups. Content: Lectures build on disciplinary knowledge gained from previous units and apply it to identification of health problems associated with sedentary lifestyles. Evidence will be presented within a variety of frameworks - e.g. Public Health, Epidemiology, Ecology. Contextual information may include: physiological processes, social psychology, lifecourse epidemiology, physical activity and chronic disease, research design, fundamentals of Public Health, physical activity promotion and prescription and principles and practice of behaviour modification strategies. Discussion groups will address potential approaches to solving the problem of sedentary lifestyles. Coursework tasks will focus on practical, evidence-based, multidisciplinary solutions to sedentary living in defined population groups. |
