Description: | Aims: To introduce the students to basic and advanced experimental techniques in aerodynamics/fluid mechanics. Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit the student will have: * Develop skills in planning experimental procedures, selecting experimental instruments and analysing experimental results in experimental projects of aerodynamics/fluid mechanics. Skills: Problem solving; numeracy; working independently; written communication; data acquisition, handling and analysis. Content: BASIC CONCEPTS of measurements and signal analysis in aerodynamics. FLOW VISUALISATION techniques: the principles and methods of generation. PRESSURE MEASUREMENT techniques, including steady and unsteady measurements. VOLUME FLOW AND VELOCITY measurements techniques. THERMAL ANEMOMETERS: hot wire and hot film sensing system. ADVANCED LASER MEASURING TECHNIQUES: laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV), particle image velocimetry (PIV). TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT techniques, including liquid crystal thermometer, thermocouples and cold wire sensing systems. |
