Description: | Aims: To analyse a wide range of French cultural activities; to examine different genres to discover how they relate to each other and to contemporary society; to introduce principal critical concepts; to examine the relationship between language and reality, in relation to the novel and to cinema; to analyse narrative point of view in theatre, novel, and film. Learning Outcomes: On completion of this unit, students will be able to: * Demonstrate an understanding of French literary and visual genres in the modern period * Analyse and account for the shifting relationship between visual and literary genres * Demonstrate familiarity with a variety of critical concepts. * Demonstrate the ability to formulate and articulate critical opinion of a range of modern and contemporary French literary and visual texts. Skills: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Skills in effective learning and language skills are developed in this unit. Content: Introduction to and analysis of the work of selected French-language writers, dramatists and filmmakers in the modern period which may include Carax, Duras, Ernaux, Goretta, Ionesco, Lainé; introduction to selected critical theories. |
