Description: | Aims: To allow students to achieve a sound understanding of the nature of Spanish society and politics following the death of Franco, and to develop students' ability to analyse Spanish cultural production (especially literature and film) in this socio-historic context. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this semester students should have a solid background in post-1975-Spain, understand key aspects of Spanish politics, society and culture, and have acquired essential analytical and writing skills in Spanish. Skills: Skills in critical analysis, textual analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Skills in effective learning are developed in this unit. Content: Spain at the death of Franco, the transition to democracy, the swing from the Socialist government to the Aznar's Partido Popular government and back to the Socialists after 2004. Themes will include regionalism, immigration and the changing role of women in Spain. Seminars provide a forum for discussion and consolidation of the lectures as well as providing study skills sessions for argumentative essay writing. Further, students will discuss films and literary texts (3 in total) which facilitate greater understanding of these issues. The unit is taught in Spanish. |
