Description: | Aims: The unit aims to provide: * an introduction to national security and resilience; * the knowledge necessary to differentiate national security from other forms of security; * an insight into how states prepare for their security and safety of their citizens; * theoretical and empirical understanding and analysis of national security; * a consideration of the major issues in resilience and crisis management. Learning Outcomes: Students who have successfully completed this unit will: * have acquired an advanced knowledge of national security and resilience; * understand different approaches to national security; * have acquired a good understanding of the theoretical explanations of how states seek to protect themselves; * be able to critically analyse sources of insecurity and how states interpret them. Skills: The key skills the unit will hone and further develop are: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, and the planning/conduct/reporting of quantitative and non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Skills in effective learning are developed in this unit. Content: The content of the unit will revolve around the following themes: * Introduction to resilience and national security * States as security actors and providers * States and perceptions of insecurity * Military security * Economic security * Cyber Security * Resilience and Crisis Management. |
