Description: | Aims: This unit will: * Increase awareness of difference. Participants will learn more about issues facing people from marginalised diverse communities, specifically those from black and minority ethnic groups, lesbian, gay & bisexual communities, and people experiencing discrimination because of their age, religion or belief. * Introduce students to the complex issues around multi-culturalism and social, personal, and professional responses to cultural diversity and the implications for practice. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit students will have demonstrated their understanding of the following and how this relates to practice: * Knowledge of differing cultures, religions and naming systems; * Increased awareness of diversity issues whilst examining how our behaviour impacts on others; * Greater knowledge of the predominant religions/spiritual belief systems in the UK; * Increased understanding of issues facing individuals when confronted with multi-culturalism; * Knowledge of demographic characteristics of UK population; * Knowledge of information sources relating to diversity issues and how to access them. Skills: Skills in: * data collection and analysis; * investigating and using a range of sources of information; * learn skills and techniques to change and challenge behaviours or responses towards people at risk of discrimination; * reflective practice; * identifying theory in relation to work based practice. Content: The unit focuses on theoretical and workplace practice issues related to: * The 6 UK equalities strands: Age, Disability, Ethnicity, Gender, Religion & Belief and Sexual Orientation * Generic equalities issues * Culture and its impact upon work based practices * The major religions/spiritual belief systems within the UK The programme of teaching in this unit will focus on support for group and individual learning programmes through the use of a variety of methods including: * Problem solving exercises * Case studies * Group work * Personal reflection * Feedback sessions, group interaction and handouts Teaching and learning strategies will use subject specific or work based examples where appropriate. |
