Description: | Aims: Students will gain experience of living and studying in a University outside the UK. They will have the opportunity to develop personal and linguistic skills in addition to developing their knowledge and understanding of chemistry and its applications. Learning Outcomes: After studying this Unit, students should be able to: * Develop personal and interpersonal communication skills; * Demonstrate the ability to work and interact effectively in a group environment in which cultural norms and ways of operating may be unfamiliar; * Operate effectively with people from a different cultural background; * (Where appropriate) improve their knowledge of the host language by attending classes therein and interacting with native speakers. Content: The precise programme of study can involve an in depth research project and/or attendance at appropriate classes to support the research topic as well as other classes. The programme will vary considerably depending on the host University but will be agreed in advance with the Exchange Coordinator. All students participating in SYA have to study for one academic year at the partner university for a minimum number of units equivalent to 48 credits in Bath during their third year of study. The "translation" to "Bath credits" is done as follows: * A unit with one lecture hour per week counts as 3 credits per semester; * A project involving 2 lab days per week counts as 12 credits per semester (24 credits for 4 lab days); * A minimum of 60% in Chemistry (related) units are required including research projects; * Students going to classes not taught in English are expected to take language classes unless they are already fluent in this language; * All units taken abroad must be completed as required by the partner university with all exams and course work requirements. |
