Description: | Aims: The aims of the unit are: * to investigate the theories which underpin different teaching methodologies; * to critically assess the ideological basis and viability of different language teaching methodologies and syllabuses; * to investigate key aspects of the teachers role which can vary according to different perspectives; * to consider the influences of the social and cultural context upon language teaching; * to consider issues relating to the globalisation of language teaching. Content: To achieve the aims stated above, students will be supported in learning how critically to engage with relevant literature and to use it to inform the evaluatory analysis of their own experience of language teaching. It is anticipated that topics will include: * The globalization of language teaching * Language teaching as ideological practice * Methods & approaches to language teaching * Syllabus design for language teaching * Materials evaluation & design for language teaching * Corpus linguistics * Language awareness * The cultural content of language programmes * Roles of language teachers & learners * Appropriate methodology for language teaching. |
