Description: | Aims: To enable students to apply theoretical knowledge and understanding of basic Sport and Exercise Sciences to multidisciplinary Public Health challenges related to sedentary lifestyles and chronic disease. Learning Outcomes: On completion of this unit students should be able to: * Demonstrate an ability to synthesise current evidence from a range of disciplines and apply them to the multi-disciplinary Public Health challenge of sedentary lifestyles. * Demonstrate an ability to formulate multi-disciplinary, evidence-based strategies to improve sedentary lifestyles within a range of population groups. Skills: Knowledge and Understanding - taught, facilitated and assessed Intellectual Skills - facilitated and assessed Written Communication - facilitated, assessed Spoken Communication - taught, facilitated, assessed Problem Solving - facilitated, assessed Working Independently - facilitated, assessed Working as part of a group - facilitated, assessed. Content: Lectures build on disciplinary knowledge gained from previous units and apply it to identification of health problems associated with sedentary lifestyles. Evidence will be presented within a variety of frameworks - e.g. Public Health, Epidemiology, Ecology. Contextual information may include: physiological processes; social psychology; lifecourse epidemiology; the history of physical activity; physical activity, sedentaryism and chronic disease; research design; fundamentals of Public Health; physical activity promotion and prescription; and principles and practice of behaviour modification strategies. There will also be a focus on specific populations including: children, older people, cardio-vascular disease, diabetes, obesity. Discussion groups will address potential approaches to solving the problem of sedentary lifestyles. Coursework tasks will focus on practical, evidence-based, multidisciplinary solutions to sedentary living in defined population groups. |
