Description: | Aims: This unit introduces students to the theory of management. It discusses and reflects on the student's personal management competencies as well as considering management theories and applying this to practice. Learning Outcomes: On completion of the unit the student should be able to: * Discuss the importance of time management as contributing to the continuous improvement of their own and others professional competence. * Describe and apply management theory in particular those relating to communication, delegation, information handling, planning, monitoring, evaluation and time management. * Identify and set objectives for their own and others training and development needs. Skills: Intellectual * Identify and apply appropriate theory [TA] Professional * Reflective practice [TA] Practical * Develop self to improve own performance [TA] Key Skills * Manage own their own time and resources to meet their objectives [F] Taught (T), Facilitated (F) and/or Assessed (A). Content: This unit will consider significant and emerging theories and principles of management such as Herzberg's motivational hygiene, Belbin's team roles, Myers Briggs's Type Inventor, Thomas Kilmann's Conflict Style Inventory, and Tuckman's Model. Different leadership styles will be considered. It will discuss the importance of effective communication, handling information, monitoring and planning, time management and training and development. It will consider self-reflection and self-improvement. It will explore management from an individual and organisational context. |
