Description: | Aims: This unit aims to identify what child abuse is, and the impact it has on children and families. It will discuss the legal framework and guidelines for safeguarding children and will have a strong multi-disciplinary focus. It will enable practitioners to reflect on and improve their practice and it will emphasise the importance of working with others. Learning Outcomes: On completion of the unit the student should be able to: * Analyse the effects abuse has on children, families and communities. * Appraise the role, function and effectiveness of the child protection services. * Determine the roles and responsibilities of the multi-disciplinary teams involved in child protection. * Recognise the underlying principles for dealing with disclosure of abuse. * Understand and evaluate the current legal framework and guidelines. Content: This unit will identify signs and symptoms of possible abuse and discuss how to respond to a child's disclosure of abuse. It will critically evaluate the importance and challenges of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and explore the role of the practitioner and other professionals. It will critically examine the law and guidelines with regard to safeguarding children. It will highlight and discuss serious case reviews and reflect on lessons learnt. It will examine the impact of abuse on the child, family and community. This unit will especially focus on a joint approach to safeguarding children and sharing information. It will discuss opportunities in settings to help children protect themselves. |
