Description: | Aims: To introduce students to the design and build of embedded digital systems. Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit students will be able to: * understand the principles of digital design and interfacing; * program a device using assembly code; * use an IDE for the development cycle; * demonstrate practical digital electronics skills by designing, building and testing an embedded system. Skills: Application of the information, techniques and methods discussed in the lectures to solving engineering problems, microprocessor applications and digital circuits. Taught, facilitated and tested. Content: Introduction to PICS and microprocessor architectures: registers, ALU, registers, control unit, buses. Types of connections to devices for input/output. The development cycle. Using an IDE. Programming in assembly code. Compiling and machine code. Interrupts, timers, subroutines. Use of active pull-up, open-collector and 3-state output structures. Input and output using ports. Serial and parallel interfaces. Interfacing the PIC to digital devices: memory, ADC, DAC, displays. Practical work: group project programming and interfacing a PIC to implement a simple embedded system. |
