Description: | Aims: This unit aims to support students in developing their practice experience and clinical examination skills through taught clinical weeks of study and self-directed learning, and in acquiring the necessary skills and experience to apply their Sport & Exercise Medicine knowledge to a clinical setting. The unit draws on skills acquired through clinical experience and academic development in the other units of the Sport & Exercise Medicine programme. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to: * Competently carry out a sports specific musculo-skeletal clinical history and examination and reach appropriate diagnostic conclusions; * Critically appraise and clinically apply appropriate investigations within a consultation; * Develop evidence-based rehabilitation programmes for injured athletes or patients in conjunction with other health professionals and coaches; * Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide sport and exercise medicine services to a clinic of team; * Communicate effectively through the development of positive and supporting relationships with patient/client groups and other health professionals; * Develop and demonstrate clinical competence in the medical management of team support including the planning and preparation of team travel and the application of doping infringement legislation; * Provide emergency care to those engaged in sport & exerciwe and elite and recreational athletes; * Critically appraise, consolidate and apply knowledge gained in this and other modules in the management of a broad range of sport & exercise conditions; * Evaluate the role of practice sports science as applied to Sport & Exercise Medicine. Skills: On completion of this unit students should be able to demonstrate the following: Knowledge and understanding: (Taught, Facilitated, Assessed) * A critical understanding of the clinical application of sport & exercise medicine skilss * Competency in pre-hospital emergency care * Successful application of SEM skills to individual athletes and to the team environment. * Appropriate application of exercise medicine skills to the general population Intellectual skills (Taught, Facilitated, Assessed) * Information synthesis * self-directed learning * originality in problem solving * reflection on learning and practice * Critical appraisal and application of scientific literature and evidence base in relation to clinical practice * Clinical application of knowledge relevant to the practice of Sport & Exercise Medicine Professional practical skills (Taught, Facilitated, Assessed) * Application of safe, ethical and legal sports medicine practice * Synthesis and application of knowledge and understanding from different sources and relevant theory to practice * Management and support of multi-disciplinary SEM teams * Engagement in reflective practice. Key skills * Planning and management of independent learning (Taught, Facilitated) * Effective communicatation with colleagues and tutors through asynchronous online discussions (Taught, Facilitated) * Critically reflect on and develop practice (Taught, Facilitated Assessed) * Integration and critical evaluation of information gathered from a wide range of resources including text books, journal articles, web pages and other online resources. An appreciation for a hierarchy of evidence should be displayed.(Taught, Facilitate, Assessed). Content: * Learning needs review via Learning Needs Analysis (LNA) and Personal Development Plans (PDPs) as part of a portfolio of experiential learning. * Gaining experience in clinical practice - facilitation and guidance in appropriate clinical experience in a range of setting including team, clinic and pre-hospital trauma settings. * Evaluating the process of critical analysis and reflection culminating in the formulation of reflective case studies. * A critical review of the clinical examination and biomeechanics of the upper limb, lower limb and spine together with associated clinical examination techniques * An examination of coaching and coach rehabilitation techniuqes. * Practice of first aid and life support (Exemption is granted with a suitable pre-hospital trauma certificate) * Experience of the wider multidisciplinary sports team as it applies to the prevention of injury and rehabilitation * Practice of strapping and massage techniques * Experience of evaluating patients in a clinic and formulating a plan for their management. |
