Description: | Aims: The main aim of this unit is to enable students to understand the range of alcohol and drug related harms and problems. The unit will explore the history of drug and alcohol misuse and present a historical perspective on societal responses to drug and alcohol use. It will introduce students to the concepts and classifications of substance misuse and dependence, look at legal, social, political and medical responses and introduce students to the current Drug and Alcohol Strategies and the NTA 'Models of Care'. Students will be encouraged to explore their own beliefs for the reasons for drug and alcohol misuse. Learning Outcomes: Having completed this unit, students will be able to: * Define the types of harms associated with substance use. * Construct an effective opinion of addiction/dependence * Understand the application of biological, psychological and sociological models to substance misuse. * Describe current legal and political frameworks to manage substance misuse. Content: This unit is concerned with: * Substance Use and Misuse: history, reasons and types of problem * The Concept of Dependence * Models of Addiction: overview of biological, psychological and social models - the bio-psycho-social integration. * National and International Responses to substance misuse. |
