This unit aims to introduce students to an effective model of motivation and behaviour change for people with substance use disorders. It will develop students' understanding of the concepts, rationale and application of this model in a range of settings and review the evidence for effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing. Students will explore the practice and application of Motivational Interviewing through demonstration and role play with the objective of enabling students to implement and integrate MI into their practice.

Learning Outcomes:
Having completed this unit, students will be able to:
* Explain the key concepts informing Motivational Interviewing.
* Understand the utility of Motivational Interviewing in their particular work setting.
* Demonstrate basic competence in the practical application of MI.

Content:
This unit is concerned with the development of the necessary knowledge, skills and techniques required to motivate clients change addictive behaviours. Supporting the practical element of this module is the associated research evidence which underpins the techniques used in the above processes. Students are shown how to use this information to inform and develop their clinical practice within the workplace.
