Description: | Aims: The aims of this unit are to investigate and apply bending theory, examine fluid flow and the effects of friction and analyse free vibration and damping both theoretically and practically. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit students should be able to: * Apply simple bending theory; * Establish the techniques used in dynamic balancing of rotating masses; * Determine the rate of flow, change in pressure and effects of losses in pipe flow; * Determine the natural frequency and periodic time for un-damped spring systems vibration with simple harmonic motion. Content: This unit focuses on: * Determine support reactions for simply supported beams; * Construct shear force and bending moments diagrams for simply supported beams with point loads and uniformly distributed loads; * Identify the bending and torsion formulae and their application to simply supported beams; * Balancing of single and multiple plane systems; * Using the continuity equation and Bernoulli's theorem to determine velocity, rate of flow, change in pressure; * Identify frictional losses of fluids flowing in pipes; * Investigating simple harmonic motion in terms of displacement, velocity and acceleration; * Determine the natural frequency, and periodic time of a spring / mass system; * Identify the effects of damping on systems vibrating with simple harmonic motion. |
