Description: | Aims: The aims of this unit are to investigate lean manufacture and process improvement techniques and to use the techniques of value engineering. Learning Outcomes: On completion of the unit the students should be able to: * analyse the principles of lean manufacturing; * evaluate and improve systems by applying the principal process improvement techniques; * evaluate and improve the design of products using value analysis engineering. Skills: During this unit students should gain the following skills: Intellectual * gathering, processing and analysing technical information (F, A) * formulating outcomes (F, A) Professional * making written and verbal presentations (F, A) * using design techniques (T, F,A) Practical * developing identification and observational skills to maintain records and contribute to reports (T, A) * using value engineering techniques (T, F,A) Key * writing reports (F, A). Content: This unit concentrates on: * elimination of waste, total quality, just in time (JIT) manufacture; * sustainability, total productive maintenance (TPM), single minute exchange of dies (SMED), production cell arrangement (U shaped layout); * continuous improvement (Poke yoke, Kaizan, Schonberger's 17 points for world class manufacturing); * value engineering techniques, function value analysis and function cost analysis, design for manufacture; * design for manufacture and assembly. |
