Description: | Aims: The aims of this unit are to develop an understanding of the use of CAD and CAM packages and how they interact, and provide the student with experience of a range of CAD packages, as well as ensuring the students understand the basics of CAM machining. Learning Outcomes: On completion of the unit the student should be able to: * Generate a range of solid models using different construction techniques; * Evaluate the use of different features and techniques when constructing a solid model; * Produce a component drawing and be able to transfer it into a CAM package; * Simulate a range of cutter paths using suitable CAM software; * Understand the basics of CAM machinery. Skills: During the unit students should gain the following skills: Intellectual: * Improving own learning and performance (F,A) * Applying theory to practice (T, F, A) * Formulating outcomes (A) * Making and defending decisions (A) * Demonstrating appropriate critical thinking skills (T,F,A) * Evaluate appropriate CAD packages (A) Professional: * Making written and verbal presentations (A) * Facilitation and negotiation (A). * Development of an appropriately analytic approach (T,F) * Communicating professionally, using different formats (T, F, A) * Working in an independent and autonomous way (F, A) * Making choices within given constraints (F,A) * Produce drawings to given design briefs (T,A) * Produce solutions to design problems with due regard to time and cost implications (T,A) Practical: * Prioritising time and tasks (F) * Self organisation and management (F) * Planning appropriate support and monitoring progress (T, F) * Produce drawings (T,A) * Produce cutter path simulations (T,A) Key: * Writing reports (A) * Ability to apply theory into practice (T,F,A) * Problem solving skills (T,F,A) * Ability to produce work to agreed specifications and deadlines (A) * A good working knowledge of a range of CAD/CAM packages (F). Content: This unit concentrates on: * Features of solid CAD modelling; * Evaluation of drawing features; * Completion of SolidWorks tutorials; * Understanding of the workings of a cad package; * Appreciation of various cad packages; * Ability to construct a range of models using an appropriate cad package; * Drawing Production; * CAM Processes; * Discussion of cutter paths; * Simulation of cutter paths; * Transfer of data from cad packages to cam package. |
