Description: | Aims: The Unit aims to: * Introduce the concept of evidence-based practice * Provide a critical overview of how this idea is used practically in other disciplines * Assess how HRM and consultancy is currently practiced * Demonstrate how HRM and consultancy can be approached from an evidence-based perspective * Identify the costs and benefits of an evidence-based approach * Give hands-on experience of what practicing in an evidence-based way entails * Provide the opportunity to conduct a systematic review of evidence focused on a practice problem. Learning Outcomes: On completion of this Unit, students should be able to: * Demonstrate a good understanding of evidence-based practice in other fields * Assess the strengths and weaknesses and costs and benefits of both evidence-based practice and typical HRM and consultancy practice * Describe how judgements of the quality and relevance of different forms of evidence can be made * Assess the extent to which claims made about HRM and consultancy practices are supported by evidence * Identify the barriers to and facilitators of evidence-based practice * Conduct a systematic review. Skills: * Critical thinking and reasoning * Identifying and gathering the best available evidence * Critical appraisal of different forms of evidence * Applying evidence of different forms to decision-making. Content: What is evidence-based practice? Where did it come from? What is practice currently based on? What is evidence-based management? What do we mean by evidence? How can different forms of evidence be gathered and critically appraised? What does evidence-based management look like in practice? How is this different from or similar to typical approaches in HRM and consultancy? How can HR managers and consultants practice in a more evidence-based way? What are the costs and benefits of doing so? How can the best available evidence relevant to a practice question and problem be identified and summarized. |
