Description: | Aims: To explore the relevance of sociological concepts and methods of enquiry to social work and to equip students with the skills to move beyond their personal interpretations of the world and to consider the social influences which shape their lives and those of service users. This will also enable students to examine the creation and use of knowledge based on social research. To make explicit the links between theory & practice. Learning Outcomes: On completion of the unit the students should be able to: * Demonstrate their understanding of theories and methods about working with the main groups of people using services (knowledge indicator 4d) * Critically appraise theories of organisations, group behaviour & organisational change (knowledge indicator 4h) * Understand why people use social work & social care services (knowledge indicator 2d) * Work sensitively when dealing with issues of diversity (Key Role 6 Unit 19 Element 19.1 d) * Understand and make use of strategies to challenge discrimination, disadvantage and other forms of inequality and injustice (knowledge indicator 3 f) * Be able to use theory to explain the circumstances of service users/carers. Skills: Intellectual * develop skills in problem solving, utilising research and evaluation methodologies. The concepts of discrimination, oppression and diversity and their relevance for social work practice; the notion of knowledge and evidence-based practice and its importance to ethical practice; research methodologies & critical appraisal skills. |
