Description: | Aims: * To begin to prepare students for mental health social work practice; * To critically examine mental health and disorder from psychological, social and theoretical perspectives. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit students will be able to: * Identify the main dimensions of the medical and social model of mental disorder; * Critically examine the main forms of mental health and mental disorder and show an understanding of their impact on the individual, the family/group and on society; * Begin to place mental health within an organisational context in both statutory and non statutory contexts; * Begin to develop an understanding of the ethics involved in mental health social work; * Incorporate a service user & carer perspective in mental health issues and in the development of practice. Skills: Intellectual: * To think creatively and analytically (f/t/a); * To communicate an argument (f/a); * To critically evaluate and assess research and evidence (f/t/a); * To gather information from a variety of sources (f/a); * To synthesize information from a number of sources. Professional: * To develop sensitivity to the values and interests of others (f/t/a); * To apply principles of sociological and social policy analysis (t/a). Transferable key skills: * Essay research, preparation and writing skills (f/t/a); * To reflect upon own academic and professional performance (t/a). Knowledge outcomes: * Knowledge of social processes impinging on service users (t/a); * Knowledge of the nature of social work processes (t/a); * Knowledge of services (t/a); * Knowledge of organisational processes (t/a). Content: * the history of mental health and mental disorder * pathologisation of everyday behaviour * mental health and the human life-cycle * service user & carer perspectives * 'race', culture, gender and ethnicity in relation to mental health * the social work role in relation to specific mental health conditions, including: * adult mental health disorders * childhood disorders * common mood disorders * bipolar disorder * schizophrenia * Personality disorders * suicide and acts of self harm * eating disorders * post traumatic stress disorder * alcohol & drug problems. |
