Description: | Aims: To provide an introduction to façade engineering including the multi-functional nature of the building envelope and the need for holistic design. Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the Unit the students must demonstrate the ability to: * specify the performance of façades in terms of weathertightness, structural integrity, environmental performance, quality and appearance; * understand the role of different professionals in the design and construction process. Skills: Critical assessment of the different drivers of façade design, understanding of the design conflicts and ability to resolve these with other building professionals. Oral communication skills facilitated in a multi-disciplinary group environment. Written communication skills assessed. Content: To identify the: * role of the façade engineer * function of the façade, * drivers of design including buildability, appearance, weathertightness and appearance. To evaluate the role of whole building specification and verification of performance. |
