Description: | This unit runs during the summer vacation period between Years 2 & 3 of the MPharmacy programme. Aims: Gain an understanding of how and why: * A hospital pharmacy services operates; * What the role of the hospital pharmacist is; * Clinical pharmacy is practiced in secondary care. Learning Outcomes: Linked to GPhC Standard 10 outcomes After completing this unit, students should KNOW/have experience of: * How the pharmacy service contributes to the care of patients in hospital. * How pharmacists (in various roles in the hospital pharmacy team) interact with and form part of the hospital multidisciplinary team in order to improve patient outcomes (10.1h) (10.2.1e) * What the roles of non-pharmacist members of the hospital pharmacy team are, and appreciate the contribution they make to the work of the hospital pharmacy department * How the Stores section of the hospital pharmacy procures and stores medicines (10.2.3f) * How workflow is managed in hospital pharmacy activities, including the way the pharmacy team works, to minimise risk (10.2.3i,k) * How clinical governance is applied in practice (10.1d) * How and what diagnostic tests are used to determine the effectiveness and safety of prescribed medicines and inform clinical decision making. (10.2.2a) (10.2.4c) After completing this unit, students should be able to SHOW HOW: * Pharmacists apply evidence based practice in order to intervene to optimise patient's pharmaceutical care at ward level. (10.2.1b,c) * A medicines chart is assessed by a pharmacist to determine technical accuracy, completeness, clarity and clinical appropriateness. (10.2.2d,e) * To follow local hand-washing guidelines to promote good infection prevention and control practice (10.2.3l) After completing this unit, things that students should have DONE include: * Demonstrating consistently professional behaviour (10.2.5a) * Reflected on their experiences in order to identify key learning points and develop a future development plan relating to knowledge and skills underpinning their practice. (10.2.5b,c,d) Skills: * Develop communication skills with patients and members of the hospital healthcare team * Increase understanding of professionalism and the foundation it lays down for being a pharmacist, and demonstration of professional behaviours * Applying principles of reflective learning to identify and act upon learning needs, as it relates to future CPD learning and development. |
