Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To introduce the student to methods of individual and group learning and assessment, including library and web-based resources; to outline the importance of self-directed study, personal development planning and continuing professional development. To introduce the student to safe laboratory practice, basic concepts of experimental error and structured laboratory report writing.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the unit the student should be able to:
1. organise effective notes;
2. demonstrate use of library and appropriate computing facilities in the University to research and to write essays and laboratory reports in a scientific style;
3. calculate basic statistical distributions and summarise data;
4. work safely in a chemistry/pharmacology laboratory.

Content:
Key skills including effective study and note taking. Continuing professional development. Introduction to University computer facilities. Use of electronic communications, the library and bibliographic searches. Basic word-processing and spreadsheet use. Statistical distributions, calculation of mean, median, variance, regression. Use of statistical software. Directed essay writing (in tutor groups). Importance of group work. Introduction to pharmacology practicals.
