Description: | Aims: To introduce students to the study of French history, politics, society and culture through a chronological survey of the long nineteenth century (1789-1914). To study a range of French cultural activities, examining different genres (plays, novels, paintings). Learning Outcomes: On completion of the Unit students shall have an appreciation of the interplay between politics and culture in the shaping of the French state prior to the First World War, being equipped with the theoretical and practical tools to engage with cultural artefacts and political issues which articulate the period. Skills: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit. Language skills are developed in this unit. Content: The Unit is taught in French. Contents include: The French Revolution of 1789 Images of the Revolution Revolutions of 1830 and 1848 Art, reality, history: changing visions The Third Republic: modernity, industrialisation, class and social issues Painting with light: from camera obscura to camera France as a world power: colonialism, French politics, and the eve of War. |
