Description: | Aims: To introduce students to the history of French politics and colonisation, examining France's contemporary situation on the world stage within the context of colonialisation, anti-colonialism, post-colonialism, francophonie, and multiculturalism. Learning Outcomes: On completion of the Unit students shall have an appreciation of the interplay between history, politics, and culture within French society in the specific context of France's colonial and post-colonial heritage, and be able to demonstrate their understanding of the political and cultural forces which have shaped this aspect of contemporary French society. Skills: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit. Language skills are developed in this unit. Content: The Unit is taught in French. Content includes: * France and its Empire * France and Algeria * Decolonisation: pre- and post- * La francophonie * Multicultural France: political, filmic and literary representations * France and the world. |
