Description: | Aims: The course aims to consolidate and extend language already acquired and to significantly improve students' accuracy when writing and fluency when speaking. Furthermore, it aims to extend the students' vocabulary range (including idiomatic expressions) and to introduce more complex authentic reading texts and listening extracts, relating to current affairs and the culture of China. Learning Outcomes: On completion of the course students will be able to: * Communicate confidently and spontaneously in a wide range of situations * Take an active part in discussions, accounting for and sustaining their views * Understand the gist and some detail of recorded or broadcast audio material on topics related to the culture and geography of China and on current affairs * Access more demanding texts with the help of a dictionary * Write CV, covering letters and short essays on topics of general and cultural interest * Actively use approx. 450 Chinese characters. Skills: * Speaking, Reading, Listening and Writing in the target language (all assessed) * Interpersonal skills, communication, team skills (facilitated) * IT skills (facilitated) * Intercultural skills (facilitated and taught) * Autonomous learning (facilitated) * Research and organisational skills (facilitated) * Cognitive (taught). Content: The course consolidates previously acquired language structures and skills and further develops the four core competences of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students' active and passive vocabulary will increase. Cultural knowledge and understanding will be taught through the use of culturally relevant and topical audio/video and reading materials. The course develops students' accuracy through appropriate writing tasks. It further develops fluency, spontaneity and constructive reasoning through appropriate classroom activities. |
