Description: | Aims: To provide an introductory knowledge to the planning and design of aspects of transportation infrastructure. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of the unit, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the techniques used in the design and planning of transportation infrastructure, and knowledge of its relationship to the social, political and environmental context in which it is carried out. Skills: Ability to design and assess aspects of transportation infrastructure. Content: Introduction to transportation infrastructure, organisation of highway authorities in the UK, highway geometric design, pavement design, port and airfield pavement design, railway engineering. Note: Bridge engineering, transport planning and coastal (port) engineering are included in other specialist units. |
