Description: | Aims: To gain knowledge and experience in inquiry-based research. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to conceive, develop, conduct and disseminate research. Skills: Intellectual skills * Critical appraisal of a research field - assessed * Conception of a research thesis - facilitated * Design of a suitable research approach to tackle a problem - facilitated * Conducting of research into a stated thesis - facilitated * Dissemination of research in professional and public-engagement settings - assessed Professional/Practical skills * Analytical, laboratory or computational skills related to the material covered - assessed Transferable/key skills * Communication skills - assessed. Content: Supervision of research project according to the specific nature of the topic. Taught research skills include literature search, critical reading, problem formulation, design of research approach, data gathering (through one or more of literature search, field work, questionnaires, laboratory tests, analytical work or computation), formulation of discussion, publication strategies, design of public-engagement activity, engaging with the public, engaging with research professionals and grant proposal development. |
