Description: | Aims: To prepare students for independent laboratory work in a work placement or final year project situation. To introduce protein and nucleotide databases and their use. Learning Outcomes: After taking this course the student should be able to: * Perform typical laboratory calculations; * Describe the process and requirements of keeping a laboratory notebook; * Dissect a published paper and explain the basic techniques used; * Outline the ethical framework within which research scientist function; * Carry out basic laboratory manipulations to a high standard; * Use database search tools to explore nucleotide and protein data for relevant information.
