Description: | Aims: The aim of this course is to further develop students' essay writing skills in and introduce report writing skills in order to help raise the standard of their degree course work and examination answers. The course also aims to develop students' presentation skills. Learning Outcomes: Having completed this unit students will be better able to: * Critically evaluate texts * Evaluate and improve their own writing * Produce an academic essay * Incorporate source material effectively * Plan and write an outline for a report * Understand how to structure a report * Prepare, plan and deliver an oral presentation. Skills: Having completed this unit students will be better able to: Re academic writing skills: * Think critically about the research or opinions of others * Develop a questionnaire and interview to collect data * Communicate research findings in a report Presentation skills: * Adopt appropriate body language when giving a presentation * Use technical visual aids when giving a presentation * Understand the principles of time management when giving a presentation * Cope with nerves, equipment failure etc. when giving a presentation. Content: Review of essay writing skills: * Satisfactorily addressing an essay title or question * Summarising and paraphrasing * Synthesising sources * Referencing correctly * Academic style * Further development of a critical approach Report writing: * Comparison of the structure of essays and reports * Analysing the sections of a report * Language of reports * Writing an abstract * Writing a report based on primary data Presentation skills: * Planning and structuring the talk * The stages of a talk * Visual aids * Delivery (including intonation, body language etc) * Dealing with questions and answers * Trouble-shooting * Group presentations. |
