Description: | Aims: To develop a research project proposal and collect data to support the proposal as part of a group, and to independently complete data analysis and interpretation and produce a final research project report. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students should be able to: * Plan and produce a research project proposal * Discuss and agree the overall project design * Plan and collect data * Write an appropriate review of literature * Produce a final research project report * Defend their project work in a viva-voce examination Skills: * Knowledge and understanding (facilitated and assessed) * Intellectual skills (facilitated and assessed) * Professional practical skills (facilitated and assessed) * Written communication (facilitated and assessed) * Spoken communication (facilitated and assessed) * Numeracy (facilitated and assessed) * Data acquisition, handling, and analysis (facilitated and assessed) * Information technology (facilitated and assessed) * Problem solving (facilitated and assessed) * Working independently and as part of a group (facilitated and assessed) Content: * Development of research ideas and writing a research proposal (students will prepare a research proposal for a group project in a chosen topic of study) * Collection of group project data * Individual presentation of research project in written format * Production of a final report including an abstract, introduction and review, methods, results, discussion, references and appendices sections. The report should contain evidence of (a) Application of knowledge and skills acquired during the course and (b) Further study of current research positions in the field of the project. The student will defend the report and its conclusions at a 'viva-voce' examination. (Maximum project size 25 pages). |
