Description: | Aims: To gain an advanced theoretical and critical understanding of the range of knowledge and skills underpinning sport policy in an international/domestic context. To acquire a critical understanding of sport/sports policy and its impact within the field of sport development work. To gain an enhanced understanding of the diverse range of roles connected to sport policy and development. Learning Outcomes: On completion of this unit students will be able to: * Identify the systems, structures and processes of sport policy and development and locate within the wider policy eco-system. * Gain an understanding of the range of knowledge and skills underpinning development policy in an international/domestic context. * Demonstrate a critical and contextually grounded understanding of contemporary sport policy and development work/roles. * Consider and apply a range of competing theoretical perspectives to critically analyse contemporary sport policy and development programmes. Content: * Theorising policy and development through the lens of 'sport'. * Introduction to the wider (those outside sport) contemporary issues that shape and impact the systems and practices associated with sport policy and development. * Critical reflections on knowledge for the policy and international development industry. * Challenging claims for the social role of sport in an international/domestic context. * Critical deconstruction of the roles associated with the design and implementation of policy initiatives guiding sport programmes and development work. * Sport and social inclusion/exclusion. * Inequality and sport. * An historical perspective of sport policy and development. * A critical review of policy evaluation in development work. |
