Description: | Aims: The aim of this unit is to examine the contemporary politics of sporting events. It explores major sporting events (such as the Olympic Games, World Cups, Commonwealth Games, Gay Games) from a number of different social science perspectives and takes a multi-disciplinary, thematic approach to understanding the key issues. The main focus is on analysing the cultural, sporting, political, and, economic significance of sporting 'mega-events'. Learning Outcomes: In the completion of the unit, students will be able to: 1. Describe the process and identify the key issues involved in bidding for, planning and staging sporting mega-events. 2. Understand the economic, environmental and social impact of previous events and identify lessons for the future. 3. Understand the economic, political, sporting and cultural significance of sporting mega-events. 4. Explore the utility of the major sporting events in contributing to the achievement of national and regional political, economic and social objectives. 5. Engage with issues of governance, sustainability, social equity and ethics in the context of sporting mega-events. Content: Students will study: * From mega-event to sporting spectacle * Politics and sporting events in historical perspective * Bidding, planning, staging and evaluation phases * roles of key stakeholders * Politics, power, nationalism and international relations * Cultural politics of mega-events: gender, (dis)abilities, and sexualities * Mega-events: National and local policy objectives - sport, tourism culture, economic development and urban regeneration * The economics of the mega-events - costs and benefits, winners and losers * Ethics, social equity, sustainability and governance * Measuring the impact & legacies of mega-sporting events. |
