Description: | Aims: The aim of this unit is to engage students in critically reflective modes of professional and career-related practice. Students will develop both a conceptual understanding of professional self-development within the field of sport and physical cultures, and a process-oriented approach to the ongoing development of their own professional identity. Learning Outcomes: On completion of this unit students should: * be able to critically reflect upon their own professional self-identity, competencies, and skills as they relate to the field(s) of sport, physical activity and health. * have acquired a conceptual understanding of competing approaches within the field of professional identity and development. * have furthered their understanding of professional practice as an on-going process of self-development, and of how they can utilise knowledges within the degree programme to aid in developing potential career pathways. Skills: * Read and synthesise information about a complex subject F * Organise information coherently, selecting a form and style of writing appropriate to complex subject matter T/F * The ability to apply critical reasoning through independent thought and judgment T/F/A * The ability to interact effectively with others in order to work towards a common outcome. F * Written communication T/A * Problem solving skills. T/F/A * Ability to apply theory into practice. T/F/A * Ability to produce work to agreed specifications and deadlines. A Content: Unit content will include: * Theoretical perspectives on professional practice, occupational cultures, and career-related identity. * A critical exploration of personal and interpersonal modes of professional practice (exploring issues of reflexivity, identity, and communication) * A process-oriented approach to developing independent modes of professional practice in sport, physical activity and health fields * Exploration and comparison of professional development contexts, and the various skills, competencies and practices required therein. * Practical engagement with, and reflection upon, the process of interviewing in sport, physical activity and health-related fields. * Prepare students for Community-Based Professional Practice unit. |
