Description: | Aims: To take an interdisciplinary approach to examine, critically appraise and synthesise the influence of a range of human physical disabilities on functional limitations to sport and exercise. To examine the role of various forms of exercise/physical activity in chronic disease prevention and the maintenance of health and wellbeing in people with a range of physical disabilities. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to: * Demonstrate a critical understanding of: (i) the Paralympic sport classification system; (ii) the physiological, biomechanical and functional limitations associated with a range of physical disabilities; (iii) the role of exercise interventions for acute rehabilitation following catastrophic injury; (iv) the role of long-term physical activity in the prevention of chronic disease and maintenance of health & wellbeing among populations with a range of physical disabilities. * Demonstrate the ability to engage in small group discussions around relevant real-world problems and generate evidence-based solutions. * Demonstrate the ability to systematically and creatively conduct a range of physiological and biomechanical assessments on humans performing exercise tests relevant to persons with disabilities. Skills: Knowledge and understanding (taught, facilitated and assessed) Critically appraise relevant literature (facilitated and assessed) Conduct physiological assessments on people with disabilities (taught & assessed) Conduct biomechanical assessments on people with disabilities (taught) Oral communication (taught and facilitated). Content: Disability and Sports Classification: the Paralympic sports classification system and its application to different sports; the evidence-base for the classification system and remaining challenges. Physiological Limitations in Disability Sport: develop a critical appreciation for the neurological, pulmonary, cardiovascular and thermoregulatory limitations to sports performance among populations with a range of disabilities. Biomechanical Limitations in Disability Sport: develop a critical appreciation for the biomechanical limitations, including limb speed, range of movement, coordination etc., to sports performance in different disabled groups. Exercise Rehabilitation following Catastrophic Injury: develop a critical understanding of the role of a range of exercise interventions in the acute rehabilitation of humans following catastrophic injury (e.g. lower limb amputees). Physical Activity Health & Wellbeing: physical activity levels among disabled populations; the role of physical activity in the prevention of chronic disease and maintenance of health & wellbeing among disabled groups. |
