Description: | Aims: To introduce the class to modern manufacturing processes at an advanced level, including process capability and precision in manufacturing. To explain advanced assembly and metrology and their application in the aerospace industry and introduce composite manufacturing methods and material removal techniques for aerospace alloys and composites. Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit the student will be able to: * Compare and improve processes on the basis of process capability. * Calculate measurement uncertainty for dimensional measurements. * Decide on the conformance to requirements of parts taken into account of measurement uncertainty. * Optimise manufacturing process parameters at planning level. * Calculate the dimensional variability of mechanical assemblies due to tolerance propagation. * Select the manufacturing processes for composites on the basis of design requirements and material properties. * Select manufacturing processes for aerospace alloys and composites. Skills: Problem solving; numeracy; IT; working independently. Content: A. Process Capability, Metrology and Assembly * Introduction to Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Assembly * Process Capability * Process Planning & Optimisation * Metrology for Process Verification * Assembly Modelling and Planning * Industrial Case Study B. Composites Manufacture and Modern Manufacturing Processes * Process Classification * Applications of Composites Manufacturing for Large/Complex Products * Thermoset /Thermoplastic composites processing methods * Shaping / Curing (heat and pressure) Processes * Machining Processes for Composites and Alloys * Cryogenic Machining * Hybrid Manufacturing Processes * Industrial Case Study. |
