Description: | Aims: To provide knowledge and understanding of turbocharging and other boosting systems applied to internal combustion engines. To analyse turbocharger and supercharger interactions, performance and component design. Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit the student will be able to: * Describe the aerodynamic and thermodynamic theory that relates to centrifugal compressors and turbines in a turbocharger. * Discuss the parameters that define turbocharger and supercharger performance. * Explain how the performance of turbochargers is measured in a gas stand facility. * Describe turbocharger performance map characteristics and critically analyse how these relate to the interaction and matching with the engine. * Understand the modelling methods commonly used to assess performance of boosted engines and critically assess their limitations. * Explain the importance of modern boosting systems in addressing the environmental issues of transportation * Discuss future trends in turbocharger and supercharger technology. Skills: Problem solving; numeracy; working independently; written communication. Content: Background and History, Thermodynamic and Aerodynamic Principles, Non-dimensional and Pseudo-non-dimensional Performance Parameters, Radial Compressor and Turbine Maps, Supercharger Maps, Engine Modelling with Turbochargers and Superchargers, Gas Stand and Engine Dynamometer Testing, Turbocharger Matching, Heat Transfer, Material and Structural Limitations, Turbine Pulsating Flow, Future Concepts and Trends in Boosting, Heat Recovery. |
