Description: | Aims: * To provide students with an informed understanding of Italian economic, social, and political history from Unification to the collapse of fascism in the context of European and international developments. * To provide students with an informed understanding of the main cultural developments during the same period, with reference to key literary and artistic movements that preceded Unification and to the European context. * To provide students with an appreciation of the main historiographical and cultural debates and to enable them to develop a critical/analytical approach to these debates. * To enable students to develop critical and analytical skills for an understanding of the study of history with particular reference to Italian history. To make students familiar with essential political terminology in Italian. * To familiarise students with fundamental concepts of narrative in film and literature and the relevant terminology, with particular reference to the Italian context. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students should: * Have in-depth knowledge of the major issues and trends in Italian economy, society, politics, and culture in these crucial decades. * Be familiar with theories and debates relating to these issues and be able to respond in an informed manner to questions about them and how they relate to each other. * Appreciate the links between literary debates and the process of Italian Unification and the contribution of art, literature and cinema to the shaping of the Italian nation. * Understand how film and narrative prose work (point of view, characterization, time, etc.) and analyze them critically. Skills: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language, cultural awareness, transferable skills and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit. Language skills are developed in this unit. Content: The unit is taught in English. Contents include: Nationhood; the political system and political ideologies; social relations; economic development; the Classic vs Romantic debate; the questione della lingua; a selection of short texts from verismo, Futurism, and decadentismo; neorealist cinema. |
