Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit the student will be able: * To find relevant information on a subject or in response to a question within set deadlines. * To provide a coherent, brief and structured summary of identified sources. * To frame an argument, anticipate and respond to objections. * To think critically and challenge received opinions. * To work in a group. * To communicate a message effectively to an audience. Content: The unit will be run over the first 5 weeks of Semester 1 and a one-week block in week six of Semester One. It has two major aims: * To prepare students for essay writing and successful completion of post-graduate study in international development and public policy. * To develop students' skills to enable them to increase their effectiveness as professionals in international development and policy.
