Description: | Aims: To introduce students to the concepts of limit state design and its practical application to reinforced and prestressed concrete, embedding sustainability, creativity, and structural optimisation in their understanding of design and construction of concrete structures. Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit the student will be able to: * apply the principles of limit state design to concrete structures; * assess and evaluate the behaviour of concrete structures including the use of novel reinforcement and strengthening materials; * design sustainable concrete structures and critique the need for optimisation and the minimisation of material use; * design and analyse concrete structures using plasticity theory; * evaluate critically current practice and new research led developments, and propose new and innovative solutions; * deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively, make sound judgements in the absence of complete data, and communicate their conclusions clearly; * analyse the benefits and/or limitations of concrete technologies. Skills: Knowledge & Understanding * Ability to analyse, interpret, criticise and report on information applicable to materials and structures at a specialist level. (TFA) Intellectual skills * Critical thinking and analysis of design practice for novel materials (TFA) * Evaluate innovative structural materials research (TFA) Professional/Practical skills * Use of appropriate professional design methods and tools (TFA) * Analyse and assess concrete structures using advanced materials and construction techniques (TFA) * Numeracy: Analysis and Design of concrete structures (TFA) * Act autonomously in planning and implementing the use of structural materials in design situations (TFA) Transferable/key skills * Employ a range of techniques to review and critically analyse information concerning engineering problems, and propose and implement solutions (TFA) * Communicate conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences (TFA) * Utilise problem-solving skills in a variety of contexts and in imaginative ways. (TFA). Content: Reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete: Bending, shear, and combined compression and bending in beams and columns. Fibre reinforced polymer reinforcement. Fabric formwork and shape optimisation. Strengthening of concrete structures using advanced composites. Plasticity theory applied to concrete structures |
