Description: | Aims: The aim of this unit is to equip students with knowledge and understanding of proposed and future research and development into construction materials at the world's leading universities and research centres; with the intention that they will be able to critically appraise the future directions of research in relation to Governmental and global initiatives. Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing the unit the student will be able to: * Evaluate and compare the resilience of construction and building materials to extreme events and climate change.. * Summarise and explain the capabilities of future structural and building materials. * Prioritise the requirements for buildings and infrastructure in light of global and societal change. * Critically evaluate original research on future structural and building materials. * Judge and assess the quality of research. Skills: * Ability to evaluate critically the range of available and future structural materials (TFA). * Ability to analyse, interpret and critically appraise state-of-the-art research (TFA). * Develop a critical awareness of current issues in order to use innovative and sustainable materials in structural design effectively (TFA). * Evaluate innovative structural materials research and to use and synthesise a variety of types of information from a number of sources (FA). * Contribute to modern structural material and design debates (FA). * Communicate conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences (FA).
