Requisites: | This unit is only available to students on programmes in the Department of Chemical Engineering. |
Description: | Aims: To introduce students to the basic engineering experimentation skills, instrumentation and simple control systems required in the chemical engineering industries, and to enhance students' abilities to write technical reports and to interpret technical information. Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit students will be able to: * analyse experimental data and conduct basic error analysis; * communicate experimental results in written form; * make correct use of units; * carry out simple calculations for chemical engineering problems; * select appropriate valves, pumps and measuring devices for a particular application; * identify basic features of a control loop and propose control strategies and solutions; * present complex engineering concepts succinctly to an informed audience. Skills: * Communicate effective in writing technical laboratory reports (T, F, A) * Work effectively in group and develop team working skills (F) * Effective time and data management (F, A) * Critically analyse information, problem solving and construct logical arguments (T, F, A) * Consider and utilise various presentation format and skills (T, F, A) Content: A number of labs incorporate instrumentation and control as part of the assessed practical. The idea behind combining both, is to give the students the theory required to fully understand the lab practical. |
