Description: | Aims: This unit aims to: * enable students appraise existing products and recognise common mass manufacturing materials, manufacturing processes and product assembly processes; * introduce the theory of disruptive market innovation as the foundation for new product concept development; * develop students' expertise in a range of advanced presentation techniques and the rapid prototyping of concept ideas. Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit a student will be able to: Identify, in detail, commonly used engineering materials, manufacturing processes and product assembly processes; appraise them and provide reasons for their use in a particular application; Articulate the market positioning of an existing product and propose an alternative market position based on theory/tools/methods of disruptive market innovation; Communicate how the function of a product and its engineering embodiment are related; Propose a conceptual design for a future variant of the product and construct an appropriate 'works like' model for mechanisms or key components. Skills: Problem solving and analytical thinking (F/A); reverse engineering and product market positioning techniques (T/A); team working (F/A); prototyping skills (F/A); presentation skills (T/A); written communication (A). Content: Theory and methods from reverse engineering regarding materials recognition, manufacturing process recognition and assembly sequence recognition. Theory of disruptive market innovation and market position methods. Advanced presentation techniques for design. High speed prototyping techniques. |
