Description: | Aims: As a conclusion to the programme, this unit aims to allow each student the opportunity to develop a design to their own brief as a vehicle to demonstrate the broad range of knowledge, ability and understanding which they have acquired during their graduate studies. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have demonstrated the following: Ability to: * prepare and present building designs, using a range of media, and in response to a brief * understand the constructional and structural systems, the environmental strategies and the regulatory requirements that apply to the design and construction of a comprehensive design project * develop a conceptual and critical approach to architectural design that integrates and satisfies the aesthetic aspects of a building and the technical requirements of its construction and the needs of the user Knowledge of: * the application of appropriate theoretical concepts to studio design projects, demonstrating a reflective and critical approach * strategies for building services, and ability to integrate these in a design project Understanding of: * the way in which buildings fit into their local context * the investigation, critical appraisal and selection of alternative structural, constructional and material systems relevant to architectural design * strategies for building construction, and ability to integrate knowledge of structural principles and construction techniques The skills to: * prepare designs that will meet building users' requirements and comply with UK legislation, appropriate performance standards and health and safety requirements. Skills: The design skills necessary to resolve and integrate in elegant architectural propositions the multifarious requirements of a complex building. Visual, verbal and written and communication skills. Content: The refinement of group and subsequent individual design briefs using material accumulated in Urban Design Studio 6.1 for a building within the established urban context. The design is to be presented through plans and sections, and supplemented by models (physical and/or computer models). The design will be developed with due regard to the technical requirements prevailing in the UK. Specialist expertise will be provided by visiting Architectural, Landscape, Environmental and Structural Engineering consultants. |
