Description: | Aims: The aim of this unit is to give students the skills to conceive, design and plan an interdisciplinary research project. Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit a student should be able to: * Critically analyse and review related work in a chosen subject area; * Undertake and document an initial literature review in a chosen area; * Develop a feasible and appropriate project proposal for the Interdisciplinary Thesis Formulation Report; * Understand how to structure a thesis formulation report; * Present research ideas to a broad audience; * Understand the basic concepts of: - Responsible innovation; - Public engagement; - Data management and data stewardship; - Ethics in the context of research. Skills: Undertaking a primary research literature search (T/F/A); * Assessing the relevance of research publications (T/A); * Judging the quality of secondary research resources, such as web resources (T/A); * Critical analysis of research papers (T/F/A); * Writing a review of a research area (T/F/A); * Preparing a research proposal (T/F/A); * Presenting to different audiences (T/A); * Effective communication (T/A); * Creating a data plan (T/A); * Reflection on research impacts (T/A); * Completing an ethics check list (T/A) Content: In this unit students will learn how to write scientific reports, papers and dissertations. They will learn how to find relevant papers and how to judge the quality of them. They will receive training in responsible innovation, data management and data stewardship, and public engagement. They will use this unit to decide on the topic for their Interdisciplinary Thesis Formulation Report or MSc dissertation. They will prepare a project proposal with a high level conceptual overview, initial literature survey, data management plan and ethics check list. They will present their research proposal in a number of ways to different audiences. |
