Description: | Aims: To understand and apply the processes underpinning the effective design and delivery of health education (with a focus on physical activity), including the role of models of health communication theory and the importance of needs assessment. To engage in debate on the role and reach of formal health education and communication initiatives given the rise in public use of unofficial social media and internet information sources. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to: * Understand the different theories of health communication and be able to apply them to different aims and populations * Understand the role of social marketing and social media in supporting or undermining health education approaches * Identify the steps required to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment for health education within given communities * Critically appraise the literature reporting on the efficacy of health education approaches * Debate the ethical implications of different approaches to health education * Design a basic health educational programme based on the core principles covered in the unit. Content: Models of health communication: such as; Health belief model, Elaboration Likelihood Model, Protection Motivation Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Social Support, Theory of Planned Behaviour/ Reasoned Action, Transactional Model of Stress and Coping Modes of health education and communication: such as; social marketing, mass media campaigns, individual approaches, infographics Current debates in health communication: e.g., the use of fear appeal, challenging misinformation, the ethics of health communication, and acknowledgement of diversity of values and experience in respect of health Community/population needs assessment; Planning and evaluating health education programmes. |
