Description: | Aims: To understand the evidence underpinning physical activity guidelines, laboratory and field based fitness testing and the development of individualised exercise programmes. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate: * Systematic understanding of the current guidelines/recommendations for physical activity across different population groups (e.g., children, older individuals). * Understanding of the components of fitness and appropriate exercise for developing these components of fitness. * Knowledge and appreciation of potential contra-indications for certain exercises. * Ability to develop evidence-based exercise programmes for individuals. Content: Physical activity policies / recommendations, principles of programme design (cardiorespiratory, resistance), programme management, programme adherence, principles of weight management, preventing injury, exercise prescription in specific populations (e.g. children, older adults, overweight individuals, cardiac referral patients). |
