Description: | Aims: This unit aims to introduce students to the core concepts and techniques in operations and supply chain management. Learning Outcomes: At the end of the unit, students should be able to: * identify and analyse operations issues * apply operations concepts in manufacturing, service, and non-profit contexts * identify the link between operations and business strategy * Critically appraise the role and importance of supply chain management (SCM) within the organisation * Analyse the sourcing process in a supply chain context * Describe the challenges of managing risk in complex networks Skills: Intellectual skills * Ability to evaluate and compare different theories and practices used in operations and supply management (T, A) * Ability to conceptualise frameworks and methodologies that enable the student to link theory and practice meaningfully and the ability to appraise critically both theory and practice (T and A) Practical skills * The ability to analyse complex systems. (T, F) * Application of models, tools and techniques that are relevant to operations and supply chain managements. (F, A) Transferable skills * Ability to manage and work in teams with an awareness of issues such as culture and gender, to identify learning/working styles and to use these to the benefit of the individual and the team (F) * Facility to communicate, preparation and production of effective business reports (T, F, A) Content: Operations management is the process involved in efficiently and effectively transforming inputs (labour, capital, materials, etc.) into useful outputs (i.e. goods and services). In most organizations, supply chain management is part of operations management. But one contrast between supply chain and operation management is that operations management occurs internally whilst the focus of supply chain management is external. This unit will address the following topics: * Operations and processes * Mapping and improving processes * Flow and capacity management * Hierarchical planning and Inventory control * Purchasing, logistics and distribution systems * Just-in-time and lean management * Quality management * Contemporary issues in supply chains * The relationship between operations and other functional business areas * Strategic decisions. |
