Description: | Aims: This unit aims to equip students with a deep conceptual understanding of the theoretical foundations of financial planning and resource mobilisation in universities competing within an international partnership. It aims to develop students' ability to apply critically and creatively relevant bodies of management knowledge about financial modelling and human capital to specific problems in their own professional areas whilst taking account of the interdependencies between the various areas and functions of universities. Learning Outcomes: * Ability to take an international perspective in understanding the role of regional stakeholders in higher education planning * Critical awareness of the key areas of operations management and the relationship between operations strategy and business strategy when planning and mobilising resources within and between universities in international partnerships Skills: Students who successfully complete this unit should develop: * The ability to identify, reflect upon and engage critically with current research and advanced scholarship in the field of higher education planning and resource mobilisation * The ability to reflect on their learning in the unit and current professional practice with a view to integrate new knowledge concerning planning and resource management with past experience and effectively apply it to project management * Time management skills appropriate for middle leadership roles All skills are initially taught/delivered in seminars, and then facilitated through further discussion, problem-based learning and individual work. All skills should also be evident in the final assessed work. Content: Typical content covered in the unit includes: * The impact of globalization and marketization on HE funding patterns * Mergers and Acquisitions in HE * Interpreting university financial data to assess performance * International best practice in HE planning and resource mobilisation * Aligning financial accountabilities in HE * Incentives and controls in financial modelling * New Public Management and performance-based funding in resource allocation within universities * Functional, institutional and personal dimensions of project management * Supporting diversity in staffing - retention and integration * Interdependence between organisational strategy and talent management * Using Human Capital Theory in workforce planning * Resource Mobilisation Theory and diversification for sustainability The unit will also address a range of related concepts and issues such as diversification of academic and professional staff identities; international mobility and career progression; team learning behaviours: sharing, constructive conflict and co-construction; Appreciative Inquiry (AI) and management influences on staff wellbeing; networking and lobbying to influence educational policy; stakeholder analysis and the 'third mission' of universities. |
